Melbourne

so i actually went to melbourne back in november, but better late than never! i'm really slack with getting film developed but one of these rolls (there are photos from two) was developed by hand! a friend gave me a lesson and has also encouraged me to try making the change to black and white. i've got a couple of black & white rolls ready to develop now and if i like how they turn out i might stick with it instead of colour and start home developing (b&w is a lot easier to develop on your own), which would hopefully mean it won't take me weeks or months to develop my film like it currently does.

anyway, tahlia and i went to melbourne in november to visit elly and her boyfriend peter for elly's birthday. peter had also become the father of the world's cutest cat (monkey) since i last visited so i was super excited to meet her! apart from hanging out with monkey we went to a $5 vintage sale in a warehouse (oh boy), bought adriano zumbo macaons and stared at their weird chairs that look like melting ice cream, went to the spectacle exhibition at ACMI, drew pictures at crafternoon (a craft themed cafe with paper and pencils and crayons on the tables), and ate basically everything in the whole of melbourne. the highlight being peter's vegan oero-filled beard cake that he made for elly's birthday and it was even more glorious than it sounds. beards and baked goods are two of my favourite things in life.

  1. Oh my gosh Monkey is beautiful! And that beard cake is so amazing?? It's also super awesome you developed one of these rolls yourself. I've only ever done that back in high school where I took photography, I remember it being sort of fiddly! Hope your b&w ones turn out well!

    1. thank you! yeah developing colour is super fiddly and b&w is meant to be a lot easier so i should be able to get the hang of it when i have another lesson.

  2. I love your photos so much! When you say you don't like the cold, I must say that the steamy 40º in July are just as horrible ahah! About the developing... I was only taught to develop b&w film and I haven't done it for years, unfortunately.

  6. Beautiful photos, your photography is always so good. I'm too afraid to process my own film in fear of ruining it. And would definitely like to try out black and white film! I can't wait for when you show us the other photos!

  7. What darling photos I adore the aesthetic of film and you are so talented to process the b&w film yourself! I have flirted with the idea of processing my film photos by hand but ever since high school I have fallen out of habit!
I audibly gasped when I viewed that marvellous cake, I totally agree that breads and cake make a perfect pair!

  9. I'm thoroughly intrigued by the wee hot air balloon on the bed...is that a mobile? Tied to the bed frame? On the wall? No matter what, it's so immensely charming and really speaks to perpetual hot air balloon fan in me. :)

it seems like you had an amazing time (that cat is
so cute ;)) and I think it's great that you take your pictures with an
analogue camera and even develop them yourself. :)

  15. I love your film photography! I remember learning how to develop it in high school, which was so much fun, except I always left it up to my friends to cutting the negatives because I was too scared of ruining it. I wish I was more into film, but I've sadly become a full on digital convert. It was my New Years Resolution last year to use my film cameras more, but it never happened, so now I've sold them. So sad! That'd be awesome if you could develop film in the comfort of your own home. I do love colour, but black and white is timeless!

These photos really make me miss Melbourne. I had no idea there was an Adriano Zumbo there - I thought that was only Sydney! As I want to move there, I do wish there was a Ladurée and Messina, but I suppose I'll settle for H&M. :p Melbourne always has the coolest cafes and cultural events going on, just thinking about it is making me depressed that I'm still in Perth! Monkey is the cutest! I'm such a crazy cat lady. My best friend recently got a cat and I'm just so in love. They're such chill animals and I love that they're low maintenance. Lastly, that beard cake is all kinds of epic! That's a keeper right there for sure! Haha.

  16. great shots - i always love the look of film photos - now with things like vsco filters you can almost eerily acheive similar looks with digital prints, but still, the small dust particles that are so telling for film photography are very endearing. i know when i used to work in the darkroom it was something i hated, but now i look at it lovingly. it's awesome that you got a chance to try your hand at the darkroom as well. there is nothing better than developing your own film and prints - feels so much more intimate.

  17. These photos are beautiful! They look so perfectly old. And I can't believe you developed these yourself! Where did you find the dark room? Must have been exciting to learn how to do this yourself and I hope your Black and white photos will turn out just as good as these! I never really got into film photography. A friend of mine has a Diana camera that I tested once, but I preferred my digital camera still :) xo
